Cost drivers in South Africa's private healthcare explained

Understanding the different cost drivers within the South African private healthcare market is not as simple as examining Consumer Price Index (CPI) or looking at a traditional basket of goods. As is being examined in the current Competition Commission Health Market Inquiry (#HMI), there are various cost components and legislation that need to be considered when understanding the prices within private hospitals. This video examines input costs such as the shortage of healthcare professionals, effects of exchange rates and provision of capital as well as the influence that pharmaceuticals or technology may have on price increases. This needs to be considered in conjunction with the medical aid industry who are experiencing increased utilisation whilst also being subject to open enrolment of members.
